My work is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious. The link that I try to establish between these two states enables access to the vast sea of images that float around the subterranean mind, images that can emerge as surprisingly unexpected and insightful visions in the same way a vivid dream can open your eyes to new ways of thinking and feeling.
The numinous conversations which emanate from this underground sphere speak directly to the archetypal imagination in us all, with the resulting allegorical drawings, collage and sculpture describing a dramatic and romantic world that aims to reverberate in the subliminal mind of the viewer.
I make a deliberate attempt to avoid a singular line of thought, preferring instead to flit, butterfly like, from one area of interest to another discovering only in retrospect where I have been and what my intentions were. However, on reflection I recognise a recurring desire to explore and make explicit the relationship between matter and spirit, that which is solid and real and the invisible that animates it.
This preoccupation has led me to investigate many unusual avenues including alchemy and mysticism which offer an abundance of visual material that beautifully illustrate this very issue. I see my work as an attempt to develop a contemporary way to engage with and make relevant this age old, but fascinating subject matter.
