Excerpt from upcoming exhibition catalogue forward by Sacha Craddock:
'The domestic setting is beautiful, still, and a touch awkward. Blackwell traps subject within place and role and holds it down as if viewed through a viewfinder. Such bold graphic control comes with a strong relation to photography, and Blackwell works from photographs with a readymade sense of how an image will work immediately and then in reproduction. The situation flattens out, paint might represent pain as much as pleasure, but paint and time become one, as the subject becomes imbedded and held within the pattern of life.'

      Statement

My work is mainly about the anxieties and experiences of motherhood. I completed my MA at Central Saint Martins and my BA at Wimbledon College of Art but moved back to Cardiff in 2015 after spending 19 years in London.

I resumed my painting practice in 2016 after taking a five year/two child maternity break immediately following the completion of my Masters. I won the Cardiff MADE Summer Open Prize in 2017 and was selected to exhibit at Y Lle Celf (the art place) at the Eisteddfod in 2018. The exhibition was housed in the Senedd (Welsh Assembly building).

I have my first solo show coming up on October 27th at Cardiff MADE (the prize for winning the Summer Open) which will run for one month until 25th November.
