Biography

Fascinated by text, fonts and different types of lettering all my recent work has been made of paper. I am surrounded by piles of waste paper – A4 sheets – so much for the paper free world, I have more paper than ever. Print outs, notes, leaflets, and many of these have become pieces of work.

Some are made from paper which was thrown out from the studio, invoice sheets from a previous company which had used the building and left folders behind. I used this paper to make several sculptures, using a method of rubbing and breaking down the surface of the paper and then folding it.

The larger pieces use a contrast between paper which has been handwritten and printed paper – very different in the effect it gives. I was also intrigued by different coloured texts, crossings out mixtures between text and corrections. Some pieces relate to interesting text which I have found – bits of paper in the street – lists.

My current work is made of torn paper that is assembled layer by layer to create organic shapes, devoid of text, even if originally I didn’t have this intention when I started this series of work. The “column” shapes are of torn paper attached to the wall, one on top of the other from floor to ceiling.

The shapes are similar to folds because the torn papers create a kind of suppressed wave as it moves up the wall. This is a development from past work in the 90's where I was looking at folds of clothed figures in classical paintings, which I tried to describe with paper in a loose way. The interest in folds continued and developed into works which combined folds and text.
