    Biography

The experience of a specific place informs my work. It is about connectedness, the touch, texture and essence of a place, the history or memory held within it. The making of the work is a process of accumulation, excavation and transformation. Like a landscape it reveals the traces of its own making, a map of remembering and forgetting. A process of contemplation of surface and texture through the observed, drawn and imprinted mark is the physical manifestation of remembering. It is about perception, the foundation of our experience of the world, a response to the senses, the way the object looks, feels, its temperature and texture. The work is also about memory and the space that exists between the experience of perception and what is re-presented. It is in this sense that the images and objects are made and presented in the interval between memory and reality where remembering and re-telling occurs. I draw and make from things collected that hint at stories and memories; sketches, photos, branches, and rocks. They act as souvenirs, mementos of a specific place or time. The colours, textures and tactile quality of these objects are important factors that permeate the work. Landscape, rocks, trees, eroding, broken, fallen, are a means to visually explore the processes of memory. It is these eroded and weathered surfaces that trace the passing of time and leave or reveal a record of events.
