Artist Statement

My More recent work is generated by reflection and enquiry into the balance between ourselves and our placement through systems of language, translation regulation, and social grouping. Dialgoue with others is a central strand in  my work.  I am also interested in how we use classification and taxonomy as a proxy for knowledge. I utilise playful strategies to consider the expectations placed on the visual arts as a vehicle to locate meaning and knowledge for the viewer. I am currently exploring the use of the decorative and of colour as primary encounter points to generate projects which present open questions rather than function as the illustration of ideas or theory. I desire to generate work, which resists literal interpretation and arrests the viewer on many layers. Each level of encounter can stand alone as well as offering some insight into another level of reading, but does not function to plot a pathway to viewer closure. There is an increasing element of collaboration in my work, using collection and contribution of composite elements from both, location specific communities and wider constituencies. I am committed to making work, which takes on its context physically and conceptually, be it white cube space or public locale. I engage various strategies of viewer engagement, from the formal spatial activation of the showing context to the associative qualities of the materials I employ. These factors and the ideas combine in the space to trigger viewer reaction. Influences I am influenced by anyone and anything that makes the ordinary, extraordinary. All things that manage to lift the mundane and banal and transcend them into a here and now otherness. An otherness which functions to displace and de-clutter other thoughts and absorb you into the moment. Career path I Moved from London after Middlesex Polytechnic in 1984 to Sheffield to set up a studio base. Then to Nottingham in 1991. My key involvement in artist initiated exhibitions managed to kick start interest in my work and led to getting other shows.
