Susan Williams

Kettering
I work with site-responsive installation, video and photography and use light, space, air and materials to explore a place and its connections.

Susan Williams received her MA in Fine Art at the Royal Academy, London, and her BA in Fine Art at Kingston University.  She works with site-responsive installation, video and photography.  Susan uses light, space, air and a variety of materials to explore a place and its connections, creating a kind of fingerprint of that moment in time.  Some of her work is kinetic and involves lightweight materials moving in the wind.  This work has developed into a larger research project, aiming to make installations in different parts of the world to create an archive of the winds and places of our planet.

'My aim is to make what is already there more visible, at times capturing what we don’t normally see, light, wind, space, the potency of a colour.  Illusions such as floating and evanescence reoccur in my work making further links to magic and the metaphysical.  I use materials linked to the everyday and I am inspired by ordinary life and the need to find meaning in our lives.'

Susan has won national and international residencies which include the Vermont Studio Center and Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, Wyoming.  Awarded membership to the Royal Society of Sculptors, Susan has shown her work throughout the UK and abroad.  Exhibitions include lakeside installations in Toledo, Spain and Laugarvatn, Iceland and exhibiting with the Stadtmuseum, Germany and Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, Korea.

A Londoner from birth, Susan has lived and worked in the town of Kettering, England, for the last six years.
