    Artist Statement

With a sideways glance at early modernism Holtom's paintings unravel and restructure shifting perceptions and sensory experiences of space.

Recent work draws on a trip to a museum and responds to the experience of moving freely in space, an optical adventure outlining objects, histories, myths and personal experiences.

Drawing begins with the dropping of threads on canvas and each element of the work is built in response to previous gestures. Hierarchies emerge in complex arrangements over a long period of time; decision-making is provisional and representation fugitive. Forms evolve out of themselves, swelling and tumbling towards indeterminate ambiguous evolutions. The work of colour is to unify and diversify, painted layer upon layer seeking possibilities for subterranean lives.

Curiosity about painting's material possibilities forms part of the visual experience, yet the process of making remains an insistent reminder of sensory perception and bodily presence.
