I am primarily a practising painter and printmaker. My work has always had a strong regard for the abstract sensibilities present within the work, and the paintings and prints have an integral link to the materials that they are made with.
My early work had an almost entirely abstract and self-referencing framework. This has developed over time to include elements of still life and, more recently, botanical forms. This has become an acknowledgement of the rich environment we are part of, and also that sometimes very simple modest things can be of equal importance in creating inspiration for ideas. Of late I have also been exploring silverpoint drawing.

Biography

I am primarily a practising painter and printmaker. My work has always had a strong regard for the abstract sensibilities present within the work, and the paintings and prints have an integral link to the materials that they are made with.
My early work had an almost entirely abstract and self-referencing framework. This has developed over time to include elements of still life and, more recently, botanical forms. This has become an acknowledgement of the rich environment we are part of, and also that sometimes very simple modest things can be of equal importance in creating inspiration for ideas. Of late I have also been exploring silverpoint drawing.

I have always been intrigued by the drawings of such singularity and yet deep humanity of both Holbein and Leonardo da Vinci in this medium. This way of working has been a quiet revelation of subtlety; it has also led to my working in book form, and this in itself has led to some exciting opportunities to exhibit and curate nationally and internationally, most recently in China and Australia.

The last year has provided me with both enormous challenges and opportunities: I have been taking work to China and Hong Kong and Australia and also have had the chance to work as an artist with a team of medics visiting Zambia in Africa. Here I work in a very different hospital environment and village. I see my role as an artist in this environment as one in which to explore ways of giving people a voice for their own ideas, a voice that is visual and doesn’t always rely on language to get ideas across. This has been a rich and rewarding experience and has opened up new threads of ideas to myself and to the African artists I have liaised with.
