Vacant is one of four paintings by Steven Ingman that is responding to the ongoing empty shop crisis facing Britain's high streets. A survey by the local Data Report claimed that in 2011 town centre vacancies reached 48,000. Most of these were blamed on the state of the economy and a change in consumer habits. Ingman creates his own pictorial survey of vacant shops combining characteristics of high street advertising, offering silent and surreal ambiguous paintings devoid of human presence that are small in scale yet loud in colour.
