Artist Statement

The 'Constructions' series made in 2013-4 consists of compositions arrived at by a process of reconfiguration and editing. Folded, torn and cut, remnants are selected and positioned. A relationship exists between the different works, as sections are removed, interchanged and layered. These compositions are loosely based on the grid and the possibilities it offers for re-invention and variation. They move beyond geometric forms to play with our perception of scale and our understanding of where the edges may be, as small compositions sit within larger pieces. The viewer is rewarded by prolonged looking as small details become apparent. Some works in the series are two-sided, but may also have an 'in-between' of different layers. Other works have been pulled apart, so that the inside is visible as the outside. Sharon Phelps is currently engaged in practice-led research at Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. Her research 'Agnes Martin: painting as making and its relation to contemporary practice' aims to uncover how Agnes Martin's methods are relevant now. Her practice incorporates the hand-made and found materials. Writings are published on a blog: encounterswithpainting.wordpress.com
