Ruth Philo

Artist, Gallery educator

Approved: 02.01.2015

Ruth's paintings are concerned with colour, light and surface and their power to evoke feeling and memory.  Her work is not an explanation or depiction of the world although work may begin from abstract qualities found there.  The paintings are rather distillations of sensation and feeling and are very much about an experience of being in the world.  Through a dialogue with the painting process, they become a record with their own condensed histories revealed through their surfaces.

    Biography

Ruth's paintings are concerned with colour, light and surface and their power to evoke feeling and memory.  Her work is not an explanation or depiction of the world although work may begin from abstract qualities found there.  The paintings are rather distillations of sensation and feeling and are very much about an experience of being in the world.  Through a dialogue with the painting process, they become a record with their own condensed histories revealed through their surfaces.

Abstract expressionism and minimalism are at the source of Ruth's practice, but her painting is very much located in contemporary 21st century abstraction, where gesture has become touch and the scale is often intimate, working 'face to face' with the viewer.

Ruth works from a studio at Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester.  She is a member of Contemporary British Painting and regularly exhibits in the UK.  She has exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and has had work selected for the 2015 Jerwood Drawing Prize.  She has an MA in Fine Art (2011) from Norwich University of the Arts.

Ruth also has a practice as a photographer, associated with place and time and much of the work focuses on recording threatened buildings and landscapes.  She has been working on a series about Orford Ness lighthouse and is currently involved in a collaborative project with sound artist Stuart Bowditch and is undertaking a residency at Grove Projects, Bury St Edmunds in September 2015, working on a photo/digita/sound piece.

Residencies are part of her practice, with a collaboration with a rose grower making the focus for an exploration of 'the garden' at the Benham Gallery, Colchester in 2014 and in 2013 'From the Attics' at Blickling Hall, (NT), Norfolk where Ruth explored unseen objects from the and presented them through an installation of painting, photography and objects.

Ruth also has a participatory practice working as a freelance art educator with galleries and in community settings in East Anglia.  She runs art workshops, including walk and draw events, with a range of media for all ages and abilities but with a particular focus on older adults.
