Biography

Ruby Tingle works as an artist in Manchester after graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2011. She is represented by PAPER Gallery and is their permanent Artist in Residence. She was also awarded runner up in the GM Arts Prize 2016. Recent exhibitions include solo shows ‘The Land Is’ at PAPER following the Exploring PAPER Residency Scheme and ‘Ermine’ at Chetham’s Library in Manchester as part of Manifest Arts Festival 2017. Ruby has also exhibited work in group shows at East Street Arts in Leeds, The Old Courts in Wigan, C4RD London and Bury Art Museum and Gallery. Recent commissioned live work includes performances at HOME, Manchester Art Gallery and The Manchester Contemporary 2017.

Ruby's practice is primarily concerned with the reconstruction of familiar forms to present and document the extraordinary as authentic. A variety of media including paper, the readymade and synthetic, biological materials and sounds are collected, manipulated and reassembled to create new ambiguous forms as works on paper, performances, installations and pieces of music. These collages are rooted in natural history and aim to present an alternate folklore where boundaries between human and animal are obscured.

Ruby places herself within her work, installing herself within three dimensional collage pieces, allowing for a temporary vicarious existence whilst creating living self-portraits. Within these works she experiences first hand the transformations and in-between states her work is so occupied with. These works are often interactive, utilizing the audience’s participation to form a life drawing class; the records of these performances whether drawn or photographed, document different aspects of her Self, set within her own myths.

Lyrics support these visual works and deal with a private symbolism, whilst recordings are comprised of edited sound samples and original music, often cut up and reworked digitally as an audible collage.
