        Artist Statement

Working primarily with acrylic, oils and photography, I am currently interested in urban environments and landscapes, which reflect an psychological geography of alienation, marginalization and dislocation.

I am a voyeur of Industrial estates and business parks. I visit on Sundays or in the evening when the usual inhabitants have left and the quiet spaces are occupied only by birds, rats and foxes.

This environment of large steel-framed warehouses, huge roller doors, ramps, vents and extractor fans make me feel uncomfortable and bit vulnerable. There is nobody about in this alien landscape of green, red and grey corrugated metal in a state of disrepair, squatting uncomfortably on a broken and irregular patchwork of concrete and tarmac.

Fragmented and botched uneven surfaces are colonised by tiny delicate weeds, finding an opportunity for growth among such brutal giants of storage and business.

My paintings show these large structures of steel and concrete balancing precariously on thin colour washes of paint, which drip and collapse their foundations. Expanses of white canvas suggests the space and scale of these buildings and the sense of isolation in these strange geographically marginalised, uninhabited city environments.
