Beech Pattern was created during the Ellesmere International Sculpture Symposium in 2010, and installed on the canal towpath as part of the Ellesmere International Sculpture Trail.
The work was inspired by the sight of 19th century wooden moulds or patterns for the casting in iron of mechanical lock parts, seen in the adjacent Waterways museum. The sculpture is shaped and constructed from 2 metre high green beechwood boards bolted together, with central 'window' shapes hand carved to create a focus.
