Robert Greetham

Ogmore by Sea
I work in a variety of forms including photography, painting and mixed media. I am interested in the idea of place derived from the experience of travel, as well as architecture, landscape and more recently, the ceremony and symbolism of faith. Of Fire & Rites is an ongoing multi-media project exploring the enduring power of myth, tradition and ritual, whether religious or pagan. I also have a fascination with found objects as cultural signifiers: graffiti, a paint spattered statue, an abandoned crucifix. All objects have their own reality, where meaning is signified through particular codes and processes. I have always been interested in communicating ideas through different media to suggest not only the experience itself but how that experience is mediated through its very depiction. Robert Greetham was born in Cardiff in 1957. He studied at The University of Wales, School of Art, Aberystwyth where he was also part-time Tutor in Fine Art from 1986 - 1996. A former Director of Ffotogallery, Cardiff he has organised numerous photography exhibitions as well as writing on the history and practice of photography. He has been awarded several grants from the Arts Council of Wales including a project grant in 2005 for Of Fire & Rites. He has exhibited his work in the United Kingdom, USA and Switzerland and his work is included in numerous private and public collections.
