Biography

I create absurd, charged, fragmented narratives. They focus on human dramas, especially childhood and rites of passage, to excavate the patterns of behaviour, systems and structures which define us. By contrasting personal motifs with those drawn from history and contemporary culture my main preoccupations are with power, vulnerability and desire.

During the act of painting my figures are truncated and abstracted at will. Over time this has led to a personaI, stylised vocabulary of forms that are purposed to convey multiple identities. My colour palettes are also eclectic. They may be lifted from sources as diverse as Poussin, an Instagram snap or the films of Wong Kar Wei, but are always chosen to evoke a seductive yet melancholy tone that sits deliberately at odds with the ludicrous scenarios I conjure.

My most recent work is concerned with recent conflicts in Syria and the Ukraine, and questions how the ugly character of popularism and the alt-right might be portrayed critically in visual terms.
