      Artist Statement

The prominent aspect of my work is the process of making it. I deal with limitation, restriction and repetition and the variations of marks and medium within these restrains. Restricting myself to only certain materials and a strict, repetitive mark-making action, I control the painfully slow progression of the surfaces.

The subject of the work is limitation, restriction and repetition.

The mark is a horizontal line, the most direct I know.

The substrate is paper and Irish linen.

Any binders are limited to oil and cold wax.

Materials are restricted to ivory black pigment, graphite and charcoal.

The physical process is monotonous, repetitive movement of making lines by bending over paper laid flat, and drawing the line or moving my paint mixtures across the surface again and again, over and over.

The idea is gemination: ”No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” Heraclitus of Ephesus

      GALLERY DIRECTOR

Gallery of Northern Norway | Galleri NordNorge, Norway.

I developed the gallery’s profile to support and promote regional artists and nurture relationships with art galleries and museums, such as The Norwegian National Gallery in Oslo and The Northern Norwegian Museum of Art in Tromsø.

      FOUNDER of A:RT GYMSAL A.S.

In November 2004 I bought a Grade 1 Listed military gymnasium for my studio. The building was almost 12 000 ft2 so I decided to expand the project to include space for other artists. I built a glass construction inside with 10 studios , which I rented to creative practitioners. It was a unique creative and economic project built on generosity and synergy that occurs when creative people join to support and make opportunities for each other.
