Artist Statement
Painting forms the basis of Ramon's practice. Works are the result of an intuitive engagement with the rich tradition. Using painting, drawing and collage in his current practice, the emphasis has been on brutally reshuffling studio materials, narratives, art/personal histories and formal elements together in such a way that they have been chewed, swallowed and regurgitated to construct works. This is a scissors and paste approach to absorb and refract different things he may have seen, known or is trying to establish an understanding of: people, spaces, landscapes, objects, and other paintings.Ultimately however, the works become their own point of reference and aim to connect to painting's visual tradition and the physical and psychological landscape of his world, yet be open-ended and fresh in terms of content, meaning and pictorial language.
