My work is suspended in the boundaries between light and dark, between abstraction and representation, and between experience and what lies beneath in the mind. The medium is crucial : the physicality of layers of paint or the multiple surfaces by which an image is created in my exploratory perspex boxes. The source material for the work is taken from the internet, television news and feature film
My work is suspended in the boundaries between light and dark, between abstraction and representation, and between experience and what lies beneath in the mind. The medium is crucial : the physicality of layers of paint or the multiple surfaces by which an image is created in my exploratory perspex boxes. The source material for the work is taken from the internet, television news and feature film so it is the mechanism of the camera lens that underpins a transformation through the media of paint or layered light. I am concerned with landscape in its broadest interpretation, and am drawn to the melancholic, and to the desolation of war. I look for beauty in the ugly : transformed by the surface of the paint - in container terminals, wastelands outside the city and , in recent work, in the silence of the moment before a bomb explodes , the boundary between what was and its destruction. I see these landscapes and anchor a glimpse of them, perhaps light in the dark, something caught in the half-light at night or in the terror of an instant in the arena of war. I intend the works to illuminate a search for something intangible, something in the space at the edge of our experience or the gap between the conscious and the subliminal, below the threshold of sensation.
