Artist Statement

One can never be sure about who to trust or what things mean. In a review of a show I was in the Aestetica blog described my work in the following way; A reductio ad absurdum in photographic form, [Ekern] hints at something more stunted, self-fulfilling and ultimately futile in [his] quest for self-definition. If Ekern’s work evokes a particular act of unfolding, it’s the unfolding of an onion: a trek through seemingly endless selfsame layers that induces tears and ultimately leaves you with nothing. My work is driven by a desire to create experiences that affect the corporal body. The experiences I cre- ate are twofold and complex. They are for me but they are also aimed at the audience as individuals. Even though they seem simple and immediate they are also multilayered, elaborate and hard to decode. The topics I explore therefore often become secondary and reflect my personal opinions, agendas and ideological per- spectives. However, at the core lies this indescribable desire to create individual experiences - a futile attempt perhaps - to provide a relational bridge between my artistic intentions and my audience One can never be sure about who to trust or what things mean. But this isn’t necessarily important.
