Artist Statement
This written statement could discuss issues including abstraction and representation, colour and texture, emptiness and detail, figure and ground, surface and depth, illusion and reality, the relationship between interior and exterior form, the different ways in which paint can be seen, the physical qualities of paintings as material objects, the everyday wonder of images, the history of art, and the mystery and beauty of things. But the constructed and painted statement is the one I want to make; it cannot be translated exactly into words.
Paintings can be both a flat object smeared with a coloured substance and an image of something else. These paintings are made using photographs and illustrations as source material. Sometimes these are derived from my own images, sometimes they are found elsewhere. I usually work on two or more paintings at once, over a period of several weeks.
