Artist Statement

In my practice I am investigate the language of collage and the subsequent susceptibility of the image. Within this I am exploring the relationship between the abstract and figurative image. I am interested in the aesthetic language that results in combining the expressive and graphic qualities that characterise painting and print processes. Using a variety of experimental processes, I am finding ways of manipulating the found image to function beyond its original purpose. This ranges from altering the image in a traditional sense of collage, through to using the pigments from one image to create another image Thin washes of white oil paint worked into newsprint is used so that the solvent, leaching pigment from the newsprint below, draws its colour and composition into the foreground. In this way I am grounding the abstractions in pre-existing graphic and photographic images. These oil-on-newsprint works are themselves used as palettes for new paintings in an effort to depict the ‘image behind the image’ – the imaginative content disguised by photography’s literal mode of representation.
