    Biography

Fine Art BA (Hons) and Fashion Design BA

Melanie Berman has plenty of designer credibility and elements to draw from as she was trained in two artistic genres Fashion design (BA) 1980 and consequently employment and then later a Fine Art BA Hons in 2008 painting. She now lives and works in East Sussex and has exhibited in Kent and East Sussex.

Berman's lush abstract Neo-Romantic paintings are based on nature. If the world is meant to be logical Berman appreciates chaos and stillness reflecting modern values and concerns present in our environments. Observation and information that passes her way invade her paintings. She mixes static shapes with fluid movement, whilst highlighting the sublime of the tiny things or happenings around her.  'An interruption of space, as natural rhythms can be periodic or irregular overtime’ she says,

Berman uses various processes of applying intuitive layer of paint to construct or deconstruct by scrapping or wiping away to reveal a texture or a smudge that she sees something organic to work with. The next stage is planned as the rest of the image is based around those original left marks. Flat shapes of stillness invade whilst the underlays have movement.

Berman adds to our sense of place, pride and cultural identity, by celebrating our Ancient forests and open spaces whilst still being aware of the fragile balances within our social eco world. Berman physical explores woodlands, listens to stories, legends and poetry which have a connection to the land.

The result is an exciting style of abstract painting that creates a new visual dialogue to engage with.
