Artist Statement

Change, growth and progress are words that are often stated in political spheres, but do we really understand what these words mean? Such questioning is the predominant focus of Verdon’s practice through the challenging of man made technologies and constructs and their relationship to natural processes. Change and evolution are unavoidable elements of life, the question is how do we deal with them. What happens before, during and after change? Is it even as simple as a before and after, or are more complex non-linear processes at play? The outcomes of the pratice feature various notions of material transformation and adaptive re- use as ways of thinking about ideas of growth, how the ‘new’ is produced and the relationship of this production to the existent. Structural and vernacular elements are adapted and transformed with notions of the present to speculate on the functioning of the systems we inhabit, how we shape them and how they shape us.
