Much of the work in this series upsets the display structures of objects to look at how meaning is invested in them. I repurposed the display structures of ‘art’ to look at the use, function (and metaphor) of plinths, supports and ‘stages’, and how these devices change or interrupt a commonplace reading of something. Many of the pieces refer back to structures, struggles and tussles of cultural power, control and influence. Other pieces series use the physical and metaphoric aspect of passing behind (and backwards) through a ‘surface’. The formally arranged objects seek to slowly and subtly undermine them own significance. A distancing is hoped for - almost akin to Alice’s experience as she falls through the looking glass.
