Biography

Concepts The series Aphrodite began in 1991 with paintings celebrating the life of the goddess. From these paintings came the books which now make up Aphrodite's Library. The library is an on-going project. In September 2002 the books were buried near to where Aphrodite is said to have come ashore in Cyprus and subsequently excavated. A video, 'Discovering Aphrodite's Library', was made of the excavation. In order to add relevant texts to the series of paintings 'Aphrodite's Garden', I created Anthograms, an alphabet based on flowers, fruit and plants which was inspired by Meleager's Stephanus and his associating poetry with flowers. From these texts sprang the Anthogram poems. As part of this project I am asking poets from different countries to respond to the visual Anthogram poems by writing a poem in their own language. Poems have been written in over twenty languages and more are expected. The object is the publication of a multilingual book containing the poems and Anthograms, to be part of an exhibition and poetry event.Influences Aesthetic/Formal concerns, Ancient cultures/myths, Culture, British, European, Middle Eastern, own gender (Female),, HetrosexualCareer path Studied painting at Chelsea School of Art, 1976-80 BA, 1980-81 MA. I work in London as a full-time artist. My work is shown mainly in England and Cyprus but also in other countries. A connection with Russia came via an invitation to an international plein air in Siberia, after which followed two trips to Mongolia as guest of the Artists' Union of Ulan Bator. A connection with Germany came from an exhibition at the RIBA called Women and Europe and has resulted in an exhibition with Antje Siebrecht organised by the Goethe Institut, an exhibition in Kassel and a solo exhibition organised by the German Cultural Centre in Cyprus. In 2002 the book 'Image and Text : 3' was published by Moufflon publications containing my work and the poems of Annette Vonberg. The videos 'Discovering Aphrodite's Library' (2002) and 'About Aphrodite' (2003) formed part of the Aphrodite's Library installation. 'About Aphrodite' has also been shown at the London Metropolitan University and the Intercollege, Nicosia, accompanied by a talk.
