I have been a professional artist ( painter ) since 1959. I continue to paint and exhibit regularly.

: After gaining a degree in Art History and English Literature at Leeds University ( where I was taught by Maurice de Sausmarez and Quentin Bell and encouraged to paint by Nibs Dallwood), I was appointed assistant to the Professor and first year Art History Tutor in the Department of Fine Art, Kings College, University of Durham. In 1964 I was appointed Lecturer in Painting in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. While at Newcastle I taught alongside Kenneth Rowntree, Victor Pasmore, Richard Hamilton,Eric Dobson, Andrew McLaren, Ian Stephenson and Roger Palmer. Fellows in residence included Robert Medley, Joe Tilson and Terry Frost. Among the students I taught were Sean Scully, Stephen Buckley, Richard Kidd, Alan Turnbull and, nothing much to do with painting, Bryan Ferry. In 1977 I was appointed Senior Lecturer in Painting at Wimbledon School of Art, initially with Colin Cina and subsequently with Bernard Cohen and David Whitaker. While at Wimbledon I worked closely with a wide group of part-time tutors including Prunella Clough, Maggi Hambling, Michael Vaughan, Trevor Sutton, Roger Ackling, Michael Porter, Patrick Jones, Trevor Felcey, Joe Volley and David Hepher. In 1989 I took early retirement from Wimbledon and since then have worked full time at my painting, first in a studio in Sussex and from2001 to 2013 in Devon, and now in the Lot et Garrone in France. I first exhibited professionally in 1959 at the Yorkshire Artists Exhibition in Leeds ( fellow exhibitors included Terry Frost, Harry Thubron, Tom Watt, Mathew Smith, John Hoyland, John Loker and David Hockney!) and I have been exhibiting ever since (see below).
