Artist Statement

Mandy Williams is a photographer and video artist who is interested in the social dynamics arising from contemporary culture - particularly how personal identity is affected by environment and how our social and affective lives interconnect. Her interest in the psychology of place has been a catalyst for both autobiographical and voyeuristic projects, documentary approaches to conceptual ones. Although much of her earlier work centred on the domestic home, recent projects frequently refer more broadly to place and specifically sites in transition. Her photography of the environment is rarely passive, but shares an underlying narrative about human interaction or presence. Some of these include Riverbed Stories, which documents the riverbeds beside the industrial areas of Erith, South London and Dartford, Kent, and shows the environmental damage to these places of natural beauty and Unseen Landscapes, which use Google StreetView as a starting point to create somewhere otherworldly. In March 2013 she had a solo exhibition, Waiting for You, at House Gallery, London which looked at home as a place of aspiration and desire.
