42 New Briggate is an initiative by Opera North Projects to unite contemporary visual art and opera. Between January 2007 and January 2008 it was curated and operated by Lucy and Yvonne Carmichael. The exhibitions that featured during the Opera North season drew on themes from the operas - without taking a straight line from one to the other.

Spindrift by Andy Eccleston and Ron Wright to accompany The Magic Flute (presented as a window projection with sound) - January 07
Cockaigne by Gayle Chong Kwan to accompany Orfeo (gallery based photographic exhibition) - February 07
Orchard Park by Andy Lock to accompany Katya Kabanova and Journey to the Lower World by Marcus Coates to accompany Les Noces (gallery based photographic exhibition and video installation) - April - July 07
The Mother of All Journeys by Dinu Li to accompany Madama Butterfly (gallery based photographic installation) - September - November 07
Hannah Bolland and Edward Mortimer - new commission - to accompany the new children's opera Pinnochio - December 07 - January 08

The gallery also featured a small shop in the back room which sells multiples, artists books, cards and badges with an emphasis on local and regional artists. This is part of an ongoing programme to support Leeds based artists and utilise the gallery as a key part of the visual arts provision for emerging artists in the city.

The gallery will continue to programme until Autumn 08 under the curatorship of Yvonne and is proud to remain focused on working with artists from the north of England.
