Lucinda works with materials that emphasize mutability and seeks to underline the transient nature of experience and perceptions.

At the heart of my work is an emphasis on transience; the constantly changing nature of materials and the constantly changing nature of the viewer’s direct experience.

I have chosen materials that are capable of dramatic visual transformation; wood, steel, paper and glass. By incorporating natural processes such as rusting, burning or reflecting, there is an implication that change is inevitable and cannot be avoided. My repetitive polishing of steel in order to maintain a reflective surface underlines the fact that nothing ever stays the same regardless of any desire to hold it still.

By using a minimalist aesthetic, the greater simplicity, geometry and uncomplicated display of materials allows the attention to more easily appreciate subtle change and difference. Repeating almost identical things underlines the fact that there is no repetition in fact.

Recent work has moved the emphasis onto the ever changing nature of direct experience rather than on an idea of a permanently existing object. This has made circumstance and context an integral part of the work. Long lines are used to encourage walking, to exaggerate the changes of perspective and reflective materials also help to emphasize that the visual field is constantly changing.
