      Artist Statement

I have a first-class degree in the Humanities, a Master's degree in Postmodernism, and an unfinished PhD which is undergoing transformation into a sculptural piece entitled 'She-Shells'. Theoretical debate across the cultural spectrum, particularly philosophy and psychoanalysis, remain integral to my thought and creativity.  I am not art-school trained, and living and working on a remote ten-acres near the Welsh borders, consider myself in a number of ways on the outer margins of the Art world. The current concern of my art are the bits and pieces of memories, affects and experiences I refer to for convenience as my-self. In exploring this concern, troubling questions of sexuality, subjectivity and identity are ever-present. The experiences of loss, grief, mourning, and the arresting hold of the past are also persistent and recurrent themes. Trying to give provisional shape to this obscure and unstable terrain, sculptural techniques have proved the most effective means.  In my choice of materials and working methods, the notion of the bricoleur informs my approach. Utilising used paper, fabric, glass, wood, words (when I can find them) and whatever else may come to hand, I begin each new project in the spirit of experiment and discovery. The result is rarely a well-wrought urn, but this isn't my objective. For me art is primarily a process not a product, and I view my work as an ongoing record of that process.
