Libby's works have ranged widely from landscapes, still life, flowers, fish, semi and completely abstract. But no matter what she's painting, she tries to create relationships between the elements of the painting: the shapes, colours, lines, textures etc. Within each picture there's an ongoing process of love & hate, stillness and noise, discord and harmony - none of which is fully resolved, allowing a dynamic, emotional dance to develop between the viewer and the picture. You asked for it!

INFLUENCES: Emotions, Landscape, Ancient cultures/Myths; own cultural identity (English, White, European); own gender (Female)

Libby January was born in Cambridge, England and initially trained and worked as an infant/junior teacher. When she moved to the Midlands in 1990 she made a major change of direction. She returned to college in order to develop her lifelong interest in art. Over 4 years she attended two courses and subsequently gained diplomas in Fine Art and Printmaking.  Since then she has successfully taken part in a number of exhibition events and competitions, both regionally and nationally. Shortly after leaving college she had a significant break-through when one of her large pastel abstracts was chosen to hang in the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. This exhibition, acknowledged as one of the major international art events, has given Libby the opportunity to be noticed by a larger audience. This included fine art publishers, gallery administrators, agencies and of course the general public. The sale of this work and the ensuing interest shown by the “art world” became Libby’s springboard to her career as a full time artist. She takes part in many art events across the UK, has had a number of solo exhibitions and has had her work included in limited edition fine art print catalogues. Libby's work is always developing and from using artists' pastels (she is a Pastel Society member) she continues to experiment and explore different media to real - ise her ideas.
