As the chair was once a domestic luxury, the metaphorical ‘empty chair’ is seldom found in folklore, making empty chair imagery peculiar to the depiction of the human condition in a post-industrial society. The chairs represent people held back by various belief systems that sustain a sense of alienation in society.
