Artist Statement
Using often repetitive and time consuming methods of working, my practice engages with an obsessive fetishization of labour. Ideas of control, discipline and desire are explored through an investigation into the material excess that surrounds us; crystallizing to form suggested narratives, and alluding to possible meanings and functions. Considering the construction of the self, and everyday rituals, I explore conflicting ideas of individual impulses and mechanisms of social control; the temporary and the permanent; ornament and function - initiating a continual deconstruction, rearrangement and reconstruction of meaning and order. My installations often combine arrangements of commercially manufactured objects that have been altered or re-constructed with collage, sculpture or video.
I also work collaboratively with Hungarian artist Orsolya Bajusz, developing miniature scale versions of possible distribution and production models; using excess labour as a material and exploring the notion of "by-products".
