I’ve always been fascinated by objects where the function overwhelms the aesthetic considerations and in others where the visual aspect of the thing only gives clues as to what is going on.
In some of my recent work I’ve been trying to make objects of ambiguous function and sometimes I’ve been designing them with a level of brutal visualization to keep them simple and I hope, resonant.
I’m also making object/scenarios which could be viewed from the point of view of a detached voyeur or desperate participant. In this way I’m trying to explore ideas about how we all view certain events, whether directly involved or like most of us most of the time, as dispassionate observers of events involving other people.
I find it interesting that most of us are more affected by local events such as seeing a child take a bad fall from their scooter on the school run, whereas, a news report of the deaths of hundreds of people on the other side of the world, leaves us indifferently concerned.
