My current work is all about homes and spaces, inhabited or empty. It is about my response to the space, as I see and experience it. Currently the focus is on drawing and painting, but this recent work harks back to more performative and ephemeral work I have done in the past - mapping spaces, making use of empty rooms. Ideally I am given a space, or invited to work somewhere, other than my own familiar space (though I do also work from my own spaces, home and studio). I take my time inhabiting the space, getting to know it, building a relationship with it. I draw, paint, write, take photographs. I sit, I lie, I sleep, I move in the space. The whole experience feels a little like a performance, although usually there is no audience. Sometimes, I invite others to join me, and we may work together making drawings, or I work with a photographer, to record my presence in the space.

Biography

I am fascinated by my relationship with these spaces; my love of them, the excitement I feel each time I go. In the current house, it is mostly empty, and each time I go in I open all the shutters. Each time I leave, I close them all up again. It is like opening the eyes of the house. I record the visual impact of this, as I see it, in my drawings, in my paintings, and through photography. Recent ideas have led me to also explore the potential of video. I have also been inspired to drastically change the scale of my work, starting to work on life size drawings of the 9 foot tall window. This is all work in progress. I consider my work to be always work in progress, always practice, just noticing what I notice.

CV & Education

Personal Statement

A practising artist and art tutor, my first love is painting and drawing but I’ve had a broad range of interests and influences on my work over the years, including writing and poetry. Teaching inspires me and motivates me to keep painting, while my painting continually refreshes my approach to teaching.
