Artist Statement

When in the countryside I am often struck by the muddy, fertile, difficult stuff I am walking through, the tangles and mess underfoot, and the contrast with distant views and changing light and weather. I am also interested in what links the human with the landscape, the body, the ground, the mind, weather, light. The selectivity of memory intrigues me as does the possibility that two people who share the same experience may remember it differently. Sometimes my work contains elements of portraiture, at other times I simply use images which hold a particular emotion or meaning for me. It is important to me that the paintings convey a sense of space and light, and from time to time I go out with sketchbook to draw outdoors. But I also work with the paint as a medium in its own right, allowing accidents, layers, washes, dribbles, intervening where necessary. Sometimes I incorporate collaged bits of photographs in the paintings as a way of providing an area of sharp focus, like a half remembered glimpse of detail, echoing the complex and at times arbitrary way in which we construct our own stories. My studio is rarely tidy when I work; I refer to photographs which end up on the floor, rags and brushes accumulate, paintings propped up, several worked on at a time. I often rework, change my mind, hoping that a certainty will arise about which direction to go in.
