Artist Statement

Concepts I incorporate metals, glass and plastics and for ecological and aesthetic reasons green (unseasoned) woods in my work. When creating sculptural compositions I quite often work intuitively even if I'm tied to a brief. Design is a wonderful tool which I firmly believe is vital for most concept development but it can be restrictive at times. I work as a sculptor and applied artist, producing large and small scale site-specific sculpture from stainless steel and green oak sculptural furniture for private and public indoor and outdoor spaces as well as utility pieces, which are made from seasoned hardwoods. Conceptual work is of particular interest to me and I welcome commissions for sculpture, public art and furniture. Processes and techniques All the finishing processes I employ are natural. I avoid using chemicals that are not ecologically friendly and only apply finishes that I know are non-toxic. When undertaking commissions, quite often unusual techniques are developed because of the necessity to get round a problem, I have to be as much an inventor as I do an artist as I'm sure a lot of creative people will tell you. Most of the furniture I make is either oil polished or waxed, but sometimes I use natural patination and scorching which I have spent many years developing and perfecting. Influences I'm influenced by natural materials that have evolved over considerable periods of time, and man-made recycled composites. Career path I have an MA in product design, an honours degree in design and a postgraduate diploma in art and design (sculpture). I work as a sculptor and furniture maker and collaboratively with other visual and applied artists, if I'm undertaking a major commission, I like to employ up and coming artists who are developing their skills. The Arts Council are very supportive and a big thank you to Ed Teasdale and Elizabeth Hawley for her continuing confidence in my new work. I am in receipt of an Arts Council Award.
