Artist Statement

My work explores how both behaviors and memories are shaped and influenced by what is seen. I continually use the past, recycling experiences as my source material. The sense of performing my own identity is central to my practice, and I often present images of isolated gestures to define and give form to thoughts and pivotal moments. Loss and anxiety are key themes running throughout my work. These often manifest themselves as staged actions or clichés which I photograph. I frequently use long exposures on film with medium-format cameras, or symbolic embellishment / destruction of prints after they have been made. I draw heavily on my own passive consumption of the familiar in order to make meaning. My images hinge on my desire to make explicit an ambivalent relationship between visual experiences and the physical or psychological response to those things.
