The union of music and image goes back a long way. Music and space even further. The joining of music with intent goes back to the very beginning. With his Phase47 project, Grammy-Nominated mastering engineer and electronic musician Don Tyler (Los Angeles) fuses image, space, and intent with his unique take on ambient & electronic music.
Tyler, working in concert with UK-based digital artist Jeremy Gluck (Nonceptualism), pairing the artist’s visual work with his own electronic compositions, has founded a powerful creative collaboration embracing ambient sound art joined to a dystopian, ethereal graphic vision. Just seeing an image of Gluck’s has the potential to spark an idea for a composition or recording.
This is automatic music, generative gestures that harness the powerful artwork of Nonceptualism. These efforts aspire to evoke a sense of peripheral presence, bespeaking a deep synergy and synchronicity. The next obvious evolution begs that these pairings be shown and experienced in real time, in real space.
Gluck’s visual pieces are created from exhaustive processing involving abstract photomontage and photo-manipulated work evoking otherworldly scenarios; Don’s responses in sound are sophisticated yet also minimal, as paradoxical as the images, and as strange.
In their practice, the artists share a great rapport and a commonality of interest and creative ideals. The conversation between them often revolves around art, music, mysticism, literature, and film. Based on Gluck’s trigger images, Tyler creates lengthy ambient pieces — improvised compositions born of spontaneity utilizing modular synthesis. This ephemeral music pairs with Gluck’s vision to form potent works, filled with intent.
Subtle clues may be given regarding this intent: music to be played during times of transition, or for certain times of day, music for work and focus, or for creating an organic atmosphere in an artificial environment.
This modus operandi for musical composition wrapped back around the images well, forms an artistic feedback loop and innovates a lateral integration by conjuring a “third mind”.
The outcome of this thriving discussion of concepts and processes, project work is coming to life initially as a feature of the virtual No Show Museum, directed from Johannesburg by Andre Heusser.
