Drawing is my primal source of expression and investigation, although not limited to traditional methods by combining marks made physically on paper and other surfaces and virtually in digital forms I seek to capture the movement and changes made by and within the structure the human body. My investigations have involved working alongside surgical teams removing diseased and cancerous tissue. After testing different materials I build drawn structures that match the often microscopic motions of cell structures and movements of the anaesthetised body. When making drawings and films I have reveal something of the growth and movement of tissue. The physical movements I use mirrors some of those the of the surgeon - the gestural mark on the skin and tissue scarring the body, revealed on paper, metal plate and in virtual form. The installation of large-scale drawings based on breast cancer tissue and lymph nodes follows the progress of multiplying cells around the body of a building, at the same time echoing the experience of the patient sometimes able to overlook small physical changes - at other times overwhelmed and lost within the physical and mental confusion of a cell structure that has grown outside its prescribed limits.
