This painting is part of a series that followed a visit to the historic cells at Devonport Guildhall and subsequent exhibition there. But it also relates to other themes within my work such as space, the unknown landscapes of other planets and visionary experiences. This is not a straightforward depiction of the Moon, but part of a sphere with a Moon-like surface (partly appropriated from an early engraving of the Moon by Claude Mellan) that has been intercepted by features based on images of the Earth from space, and maps of places on Earth. Incorporated into this painting there are outlines of a map of Plymouth in one area (only visible close up!). It is made with printing ink, chalk, earth pigments such as Bideford Black, and Semple Black on Khadi paper.
