Biography

The inspiration for this work comes from an ongoing love of travel. Journeys, maps and aerial views have all fed into and enriched the work but are gradually becoming more ambiguous and less specific. I hope to allow the viewer sufficient space for their own interpretations.

Some of the most inspirational journeys have included a microlight flight over the volcanic island of Lanzarote, a road trip through New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, a visit to the island of Cuba and more recently to Southern California and the extraordinary Salvation Mountain. Now many elements of these experiences: glimpses of colours and textures and the fragmented memories of travel are coming together as the work continues to develop.

When travelling I take photographs and use sketchbooks to make quick drawings and paintings as source material for new work. Although I see myself primarily as a mixed media painter my practice extends to photography, printmaking, ‘concertina books’ and ‘ folding maps’.
