Artist Statement

Living and working in Cambridge, I am a founder member of Irregular Circle - an artists' partnership providing workshops in the Cambridge area - and this is the present focus of my activities. My own work has two distinct strands. My work in textiles examines notions of identity, motherhood and the female role, using traditional textile materials as a way of representing the complexity of female identity, and recognising how those traditional skills associated with the feminine have been historically ignored as an artistic form. I also create sculptural wire objects, often using basic textile techniques, which consider our need to control and suppress our natural surroundings. These works reflect upon a number of contradictions: the femininity of the techniques and the masculinity of the material; the constant transition of nature against the permanence of the solid metal object; and the man-made versus the natural.
