Artist Statement

I work in a range of media but predominately Film/Video, Painting and Photography. The media I use for each piece work is dependant on visual qualities and what I wish to communicate. Past work has focused on looking closer at the natural world as well as a more typically perceived viewpoint. Incorporating ambiguous elements through abstract means has allowed me to explore our responses to the world around us both subjectively and objectively. I have and continue to explore theories of aesthetics, perception and contemplation both in regards to the natural world itself and artwork that has been created from an experience with it. My films are very much influenced by painting; indeed I regard my films as moving paintings. Work by J M W Turner and Gerhard Richter have influenced me and inspired my form of representation. I have produced expressive work concerning motion, time, and the harmony of movement. My work has been based on the weather and natural flight. I also paint; using photography as a basis I manipulate images of the natural world. They then evolve further as the painting is being created.
