Artist Statement

I'm a self taught amateur photographer from an art college background. My main interest is photographing places and landscape and my main portfolio of work is landscape photographs taken on Kodak High Speed Infrared B&W film, although I also now have a large folio of colour digital photographs, mainly landscapes. I'm interested in natural light and its effect on landscape and the detail therein-especially clear, low winter sunlight which picks out every detail and casts long deep shadows. I like to resolve the composition in the camera viewfinder or screen and rarely adjust that after except for contrast and density in my darkroom for film based B&W photos. I'm not a technical photographer but I've always preferred wide angle/zoom lenses which give a greater depth of field so all is in focus from foreground to infinity -a strong foreground detail may often dominate the composition in my photographs. My B&W photos have mostly been in and around Nottingham where I live but I have a strong interest in rural landscape and have worked extensively in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. I like walking, exploring and observing what's revealed to me when the light is good or interesting; I also like to travel and will photograph wherever I go which is reflected strongly in my digital photos.
