I am the artist in residence and founder/director of Smart Gallery (Social Museum & Art Gallery), a project I have developed where I invite the public to loan objects that would engage them in an exhibition and I make artworks and contemporary linocuts inspired by this collection.  Two of these reduction works were selected for the Flourish Award – Yorkshire Printmaker of the Year and Open Up North 2014, they received Judges Commendations at both exhibitions.

    Artist Statement

I am the artist in residence and founder/director of Smart Gallery (Social Museum & Art Gallery), a project I have developed where I invite the public to loan objects that would engage them in an exhibition and I make artworks and contemporary linocuts inspired by this collection.  Two of these reduction works were selected for the Flourish Award – Yorkshire Printmaker of the Year and Open Up North 2014, they received Judges Commendations at both exhibitions.

Smart Gallery was inspired after an extensive residency with Craven Museum & Gallery and my ongoing love of objects, their stories, histories and their association to our emotions.

Works developed through this residency have included, three that were selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2011 and 2012, Record Player, Television and Ekho Radio. With Record Player being selected to promote the RA, reproduced as a greetings card, and the original, a permanent feature in the Leeds City Art Gallery collection.

My work was selected to represent the process of reduction linocut in a coffee table book called ‘Low Tech’ by Caspar Williamson for Lawrence King Publishing.

In 2012 I was filmed for the 2nd series of The Dales, where I was followed throughout my busy schedule for 6 weeks, including giving Adrian Edmondson, the shows host, a drawing lesson.

Using printmaking as my inspiration I have developed The Print Room, a pop up printmaking space with exhibition, studio and workshop, showcasing the various techniques and letting the public experience them hands on. Recent projects have included the very successful Derdlab Press in Craven Court, Skipton, initially a 6 week pop up celebrating letterpress printing that was so well received is still going strong one year on! and Grassington Festival WordLab, print bombing a village for a 2 week period.
