Artist Statement

It is reasonable to assume that everyone has at one point or another experienced exposure to some form of taboo, be it through personal practice or the media.

Perhaps this dearth of new ideas is because of sensual abundance.

‘Everyone has seen everything’ which leaves very little to the imagination.

It may be perceived that this stigma has caused a softening of the boundaries. For, what would have at one time been deemed unacceptable, is now seen as acceptable within contemporary society. Perhaps this vague separation has impaired our collective judgements. It is this ambiguity that inspires his work.

It is imperative to Wright’s creative process that he question the morality presented by contemporary cultural icons convey, as well as the beliefs we have mustered throughout history.

George’s work strives to deconstruct the historical stereotypes of sexuality and sexual identity by challenging the way they dictate contemporary behaviour. Through sculptural abstraction and performative actions he uses a language that transcends taboo, exploring the ambiguous space shared by pain and pleasure, not conforming to right and wrong.
