Biography

Within my work I question how perspective, relative to an individuals understanding of it, shapes and has shaped in an ontological sense, our relationship to the world around us. The ‘point-of-view’, relating to a perspectival meeting between subject and object can be a point of dynamic transformation, challenging the perceived stability of perception.

When ontological divisions between the nonliving object and the living subject are blurred, everything can be a subject. Hierarchical divisions dissolve and a ‘point of view’ becomes less about the subjects control over the object, and more about a mutually dynamic transformation of relations.

A key reference when thinking about the material and cultural relationship between image and physical space is that of Roman wall painting. The shifting ideas relating to the depiction of illusionary intrusions into dimensional space, raises questions in my work relating to how flatness, layering and surface can define the ontological actuality of something. Depending on which perspective is taken, the relational dynamics between things/people changes depending on the individual.

My interest in perspectivism (Eduardo Viveiros deCastro) is also closely connected to the non-linear narrative style of Alain Robbe-Grillet. His work has the ability to describe the nuances of experience in beautifully fine detail, yet never fixing the viewer/reader to a specific point. All points of perspective are open to interpretation, whether conscious or unconscious. Ultimately, my work seeks to operate in a similar way. I want the viewer to understand the image/object as a set of possibilities determined by the individual encounter.
