Gareth Hughes

Chelmsford
I work predominantly in painting and figurative subject matter.

I studied Fine Art at the Universities of Coventry and Reading prior to undertaking a Visiting Fellowship at the Yale Center of British Art. I have exhibited quite widely in the UK and abroad, including shows in the USA, China, Germany and Hungary. I currently combine my art practice with being a Head of Art at an independent school in Essex. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a cluster of more recent exhibitions have included being featured in the ‘Being Human’ Festival in London.

I paint predominantly in a figurative manner with oil paints and canvas, as well as in digital paintings. I gravitate towards creating work for my own personal and others’ fulfilment, and with an overriding wish to help parts of society. Recent work supports charitable causes such as 'Hope for Justice' , the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust & the NHS. Old film stills - reimagined - bear a fresh relevance to current times. These mix with primary source matter as well such as, more lately, portraits of NHS workers. Canvas works are created at speed, often within the space of a couple of hours, regarding the duration of painting as conceptual in line with the chosen subject matter. I am aiming to exhibit more widely in the coming years whilst continuing to reflect aspects in society.
